A Mayo fan overcome with emotion kissed the ground of the Hogan Stand after Mayo’s heroic victory.

Mayo’s incredible drought ending victory yesterday led to emotional scenes across Croke Park.

The red and green colours could be seen for miles as Mayo ended their 75 year wait for the Sam Maguire Cup.

Mayo fan Shane Fitzgerald was spotted kissing the ground of the Hogan Stand in a now viral clip after the hooter sounded, and he has been tracked down and appeared on national radio on Monday morning.

On ‘The Claire Byrne Show’ on Newstalk, Fitzgerald, who admitted being “a bit hoarse,” spoke of how important the moment was to him.

He said: “We’ve had our pilgrimage to Croke Park for years and years.

“I looked at the Sam Maguire and I just broke, just broke and that was it. I blessed myself and I just went to kiss the ground of Croke Park.”

He added: “Look, every county would love to have the honour of the Sam Maguire but we all know that Mayo has served our time.

“It’s a great achievement; I’m so proud of the lads, they’re an amazing bunch.”
