In Castlebar
On a perfect evening for football, Brian Benson’s Crossmolina side recorded a fine win on the road as they overcame Castlebar Mitchels in narrow fashion.
Crossmolina attacker James Maheady was on form as the former Mayo minor kicked 0-7 in the opening half including a superb two-point free. For the hosts, it was the experienced James Durcan and Neil Douglas who led the way for Kevin Filan’s side.
Going in at the break, the North Mayo men led 0-9 to 0-7.
The second half was like a game of basketball at times as attacks swayed back and forth. The only goal of the evening arrived after 40 minutes. The speedy Cian Walsh was fouled close to goal and Neil Douglas stepped up to take the resulting penalty. Patrick Loftus denied him but Douglas was alert to tap in from the rebound.
Niall Coggins was excellent across the hour for the visitors with his electric energy causing problems for Mitchels. As time went on, Castlebar substitute Ethan Gibbons kept the scoreboard ticking but down the other end, Adam Mills, Dylan Flynn and Cathal Carolan had Crossmolina in touch.
Two minutes into injury time, the winning score came as the energetic Diarmuid Coggins fisted over to see Crossmolina gain two hard-earned league points.
