‘Welcome to Holland’ brings powerful and uplifting story to Mayo
Laura Sanchez’s flamenco theatre production explores life’s unexpected journeys, with a free workshop also taking place at Westport Town Hall
Westport Town Hall Theatre will host a deeply human piece of theatre on Saturday, September 5, when Laura Sanchez presents ‘Welcome to Holland’, a flamenco theatre production.
The performance uses movement, storytelling and the passion of flamenco to explore the unexpected turns that can shape people’s lives.
The title takes its inspiration from the well-known metaphor of planning a dream trip to Italy, only to discover that the plane has landed in Holland. While Holland was not the destination originally imagined, the traveller can still discover its own beauty, richness and experiences.
The metaphor has particular resonance for people whose lives have been changed by disability, neurodivergence, caring responsibilities or circumstances they could never have anticipated.
Through her performance, Sanchez explores these themes. At its heart is a universal message about letting go of the life we thought we would have and finding meaning and joy in the life that actually unfolds.
Westport Town Hall Theatre said the production also reflects its ongoing commitment to making the arts as welcoming and inclusive as possible.
Alongside the evening performance, Laura Sanchez will give a free workshop at Westport Town Hall at 10.30am on Saturday, September 5, giving participants an opportunity to engage with some of the ideas and forms of expression explored in the production.
The main performance begins at 7pm that evening.
The project has been made possible with part-funding from Creative Ireland Mayo and Westport Autism Friendly Town, allowing the theatre to bring the distinctive production to local audiences while also providing an opportunity for participation.
Tickets and further information are available from the Westport Town Hall Theatre box office on 098 28459 or through the Westport Town Hall Theatre website.
