Mayo Mountain Rescue issues safety advice ahead of Reek Sunday pilgrimage

Rescue team advise climbers to prepare for changing weather, stay hydrated and know their limits on Croagh Patrick
Mayo Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) is urging those planning to climb Croagh Patrick this Reek Sunday, July 26 to be well prepared and to prioritise their safety on the mountain.
Ahead of the annual pilgrimage, MMRT nurse Marie Lyons encouraged climbers to recognise the signs of exhaustion and not to push themselves beyond their limits.
“If you are struggling with severe fatigue on the ascent, and your legs feel wobbly and flat, please do not continue,” she advised. “Stop, have a snack, enjoy the people and the scenery and descend. The mountain will stay put until your next visit.”
Despite the recent spell of warm weather, the rescue team warned that conditions on the summit can be significantly colder, with wind, rain and sweat increasing the risk of hypothermia.
Each year, Mayo Mountain Rescue treats adults and children for hypothermia at the medical tent on Croagh Patrick. Climbers are encouraged to bring extra layers and a waterproof jacket, even if conditions appear warm at the base of the mountain.
The team also reminded people with existing medical conditions not to ignore symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, headaches or unusual exhaustion.
Volunteers will be stationed along the route and medical assistance is available free of charge if needed.
Mayo Mountain Rescue recommends that all climbers carry a small backpack containing two light long-sleeved tops, a lightweight rain jacket, high-energy snacks such as chocolate or energy bars, along with salty foods, one to two litres of water, and sunscreen.
Climbers are also advised to wear sturdy hiking boots suitable for the challenging terrain.
The rescue team wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable climb and encourages walkers to stop by and say hello to the volunteers on duty on Croagh Patrick this weekend.
