Mayo Hospice boosted by Rice College Shave or Dye fundraiser

Students from Rice College in Westport took part in the 'Shave or Dye' fundraiser for the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice

On a momentous Friday, November 14, Rice College Westport hosted its much-anticipated event, Shave or Dye fundraiser.

Transition Year students raised money for the Mayo Hospice by getting their hair shaved or dyed. Around €5,000 was raised by students, staff, and families who wanted to show their support.

Thirty students petitioned to have their hair shaved for this worthy cause. Students and teachers gathered around the assembly area to offer words of encouragement and appreciation.

Rowan McLoughlin was the first student to have his hair shaved in a moment of courage, a proud smile etched on his face throughout the entire time.

Hayley McDermott also marked a historical moment as she was the first girl to shave a head, the brave Ben Hoban was happy to oblige.

Rice College is a strong school community whom have come together year after year to host this fundraiser which is solely student led.

They raised awareness of the event, sold raffle tickets, contacted local radio stations and newspapers. They were also in charge of the setting up of assembly and managing the event on the day.

Shaved students and viewing teachers had this to say: “I think it was a good experience and I look the bomb now,” Eoin O’ Malley stated.

“It was a ‘bitta craic,” Ben Hoben said briefly. “Game is game,” Dylan O’ Malley said chuckling softly. “They’re all mental,” Mr Moran said shaking his head softly.

Many can applaud the actions of the Rice College students, but they can also appreciate the teachers who put their time and effort, into the event, especially their TY coordinator, Ms Coulon.

She opted to compete in the Sea2Summit race instead as part of the fundraiser.

“I am incredibly proud and astounded by the resilience shown by these students,” said Ms Coulon.

“Not only did they organise a successful event but they have also spread awareness on behalf of the Mayo Hospice. I admire every single one of them who took part in both the shaving and dyeing part of this event, well done to them all.”

Just like every year, this event turned out into another wonderful masterpiece with smiles all around at the end, long may it continue.
