A West Mayo town was in shock when the news transpired last year on June 6 2024, that a 74-year-old woman was hit by a delivery truck and had subsequently died.
Maureen Hopkins (née Darcy) of Rossmoney, Carrowholly, Westport, and late of Bagnalstown, Carlow, was in her seventies, when the accident happened.
It has been reported now, that a 41-year-old man has pleaded guilty to careless driving causing her death.
Castlebar Circuit Court heard that Mihail Tanasevici from Dublin was driving the truck in the Supervalu car park in Westport, when it collided with the late Maureen Hopkins.
Defence counsel, Mark Ryan, told the court that Tanasevici described what happened as “very unfortunate”.
Tanasevici pleaded guilty to the charge of careless driving causing death when he was arraigned at Monday’s sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court.
The next court dates: For mention on February 9, 2026 and for sentencing on March 6, 2026.
