Mayo TD Keira Keogh has called for action on the convent development in Westport

Mayo Fine Gael TD Keira Keogh has called for real movement on the long-awaited Convent project in Westport, saying the community has waited long enough.

There is uncertainty regarding the regeneration project of the former Convent of Mercy building and site in Westport with the final cost of the project expected to be well in excess of the initial figure of €13 million.

The tenders for the project were due to be approved by the Department of Rural and Community Development at the end of 2024 and the delays has led to concerns the project will have to be reviewed.

Westport-based Fine Gael TD Keira Keogh confirmed that she has been raising the issue directly with fellow Mayo TD, Minister Dara Calleary and pressing for a clear plan and timeline.

“The Convent site is too important to be left derelict at the heart of our town. People want to see progress, not more delays,” Deputy Keogh said.

“I’ve brought local concerns about dereliction, anti-social behaviour and the importance of this project to the Minister. It’s time for action now, and for Westport to finally see this area revitalised and delivered,” she said.

Deputy Keogh pointed out that the redevelopment which was first announced in 2021 includes new housing alongside community and cultural facilities, which would breathe new life into the site and deliver much-needed resources.

“I’ll continue to push until we see shovels in the ground. Westport deserves to see this site brought back to life,” she added.

The regeneration of the former Convent of Mercy building in Westport will see the development of a new library, council offices, community rooms and social services headquarters while permission has also been granted for 18 'Age Friendly' apartments in the old church and sacristy.
