The Westport woman was among a group taken from an orphanage outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince

BREAKING: Well known Mayo humanitarian kidnapped in Haiti 

Gena Heraty has been helping the children of Haiti for over 30 years.

Westport woman Gena Heraty is among eight people kidnapped in Haiti.

The well known humanitarian was taken from the Sainte-Hélène orphanage, which is about 10km outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. 

She oversees the orphanage, which is run by the humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Frères et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters).

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases. ‎

In a previous interview with The Mayo News, she explained how she first went to Haiti in 1993 and hasn’t looked back since.

 “From an early age, I always thought I’d do something like this, and I was very excited at the prospect of working in Haiti. I worked with the Simon Community for 14 months, and that was great preparation for what was to come.”
