Loretta McGuire from Barnatra in Belmullet won the National Brown Bread Baking Competition in 2023.
The National Brown Bread Baking Competition, sponsored by Euronics in association with the National Ploughing Association (NPA) and the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA), wants to highlight the brown bread collection date, time and locations in Mayo.
On Friday August 1, people can drop their freshly baked bread to either Keans in Claremorris or Brodericks in Westport between 9 and 11am which are both part of the Euronics group.
A Mayo Woman claimed the national honours in 2023 when Loretta McGuire from Belmullet secured the national prize.
Bakers from across Ireland are encouraged to offer up their signature brown breads, whether they stick to traditional recipes passed down through generations or add a special twist. The winning brown bread baker will walk away with a cash prize of €5,000 plus a NEFF Slide & Hide oven, three finalists will win a €500 Euronics gift card and all other finalists get a €250 Euronics gift card and a Neff hamper.
Speaking from experience, last year’s winner, Rose Egan, said: “The competition truly was one of the best experiences ever. I encourage everyone to enter, no matter how skilled you are as a baker. You could be the lucky winner! It’s really as they say, if you’re not in it, you can’t win it!”.
