Mayo minister welcomes progress on €2m activity centres in Mayo

Mayo TD and Minister of State at the Department of Tourism, Alan Dillon TD has welcomed progress on the €2 million state-of-the-art outdoor water-based activity centres at two West Mayo beaches.

Tenders are currently being sought for the development of all-weather facilities at Keel beach on Achill Island and at Carrowmore beach near Louisburgh

Mayo TD, Alan Dillon welcomed the progress on the projects saying they will assist in the development of water sport activities in the county.

“Tenders are currently being sought for the development of changing facilities which will assist in creating shared service facilities for water sports operators at both Carrowmore Beach, Louisburgh and Keel Sandybands on Achill Island.

“The application requests tenders for the site preparation works, building construction works and civil engineering works. Once tenders are received, a six-month contract will be awarded,” he said.

Minister Dillon added: “There is a significant rise in people participating in outdoor water-based activities such as open water swimming, surfing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding.

This has led to an increased demand for all-weather changing facilities, secure storage and bathrooms at beaches and inland water spots.

“These developments in Achill and Louisburgh will not only support the local economy by creating additional jobs but also significantly enhance the overall visitor experience in the outdoor activity sector.

“They will provide new business opportunities at these locations and allow for the extension of the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months,” he concluded.
