It has been revealed that Saint Patrick’s Church in Newport is in line to receive a significant funding boost in order to facilitate repairs.

The church is renowned in the locality for the tower, which is visible from all around the town, as well as its stunning stained glass windows designed by Harry Clarke.

The repairs are one of 28 projects nationally under the Historic Structures Fund across the country. In total, €3.5 million has been allocated nationwide.

Minister for State Alan Dillon welcomed the news, and paid tribute to the building’s ‘fascinating history’ as well as the ‘beautifully restored altar,’ as well as his hope that these developments will benefit the Newport communities for generations to come.

News of the funds was also well-received by Deputy Keira Keogh.

“The church has been at the heart of life in Newport for generations," Deputy Keogh stated. "This investment will help preserve that legacy while supporting traditional skills and local employment.

“This is a great day for Newport, and for all who care about protecting Mayo’s rich built heritage.”
