SOME of Mayo's best-known footballers were on hand to launch an annual event that has raised hundreds of thousands for charity.
Three-time All-Star Aidan O’Shea and Mayo senior ladies footballers Aoife Geraghty, Sherin El Masry, Nicola O’Malley, Saoirse Lally and Kathryn Sullivan were part of the launch of Relay for Life Mayo, which takes place in Westport on May 17-18.
Formerly known as ‘Westport Relay For Life’, the event will take place over a twenty-four hour period. Participants from all over Mayo have been invited to attend the event, which takes place at the Fairgreen in Westport.
Refreshments and entertainment will be provided for participants, who can participate as a team or as individuals.
“This is a perfect opportunity to bring colleagues, teams, friends and communities together to support a great cause,” the Relay For Life Mayo organisers said in a statement.
“The first two years have focused on locations around Westport but this year we are encouraging families, community groups or work colleagues from all over Mayo take part. There are so many ways to be part of this event; participate, be a volunteer on the day, join a team, be part of the committee or simply provide moral support for the teams on the day.”
Last year the Relay For Life raised over €80,000 for the Irish Cancer Society, which helped fund critical services like night nursing, volunteer driver service and counselling sessions around Mayo.
All donations are welcome via https://www.relayforlife.ie/event/mayo/home or through any member of the Westport Relay For Life committee.
