Mayo records standout extremes in Met Éireann’s November climate report

Once again, Met Éireann’s monthly climate statement has revealed a slew of interesting statistics about wind and rain in various parts of County Mayo.

The statistics, which are compiled by the Irish Meteorological group, frequently raise a multitude of significant points on weather from Malin to Mizen, and this county is no different in this regard.

Belmullet, for instance, had the lowest monthly sunshine total across the country. An average of 1.61 hours of sunshine per day across November leads to a total of 48.4 hours.

The Erris capital also recorded the highest number of ‘dull’ days (days with less than 30 minutes of sunshine), with 13 in total. Mean air temperatures were up at every station, but Belmullets saw the lowest rise of 0.3 degrees Celsius, along with Newport.

Knock Airport also featured at the top of some charts. Knock recorded the lowest mean monthly temperature of seven degrees Celsius.

On a positive note, of the near 50 percent of weather stations that reported ground frost in November, Knock Airport recorded the fewest frosty days (two days).

Claremorris had the record number of ‘wet days’ (days with over 1 millimetre of rainfall) nationally. A total of 27 days (90 percent of the month) were wet days.
