It looks like the wet and blustery weather is set to persist throughout the week and perhaps even beyond, according to Met Éireann's latest forecast.

Not only will most of the country be battered by heavy showers on Wednesday and Thursday, but Met Éireann has also warned that thunderstorms and hail could also follow in some parts.

Heavy and scattered showers will continue to pour throughout the week and into the weekend. And, unfortunately, Met Éireann has also indicated that the unsettled weather may carry into early next week with more spells of rain, wind and cool temperatures.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has also predicated a wet start to next week, sharing on social media: "Still a risk of windy weather Sunday evening into Monday morning but not looking too severe at moment. Some heavy rain ahead of it on Saturday night too."

Here is Met Éireann's full forecast for the coming days.

Wednesday will start to brighten up from the southwest later in the day after a cloudy and wet start. Although scattered showers will follow, some of which will be heavy with a chance of thunderstorms and hail in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

Wednesday night will see a mix of clear spells and showers, some of them heavy with the possibility of more isolated thunderstorms. The showers will become increasingly confined to the western half of the country through the night. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

Thursday will be a breezy day with sunny spells and showers in the west which will become widespread by the early afternoon. Some of the showers will be heavy, with isolated thunderstorms and hail possible. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Thursday night will see the showers become mainly confined to western and northern areas. It will be drier elsewhere with longer clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.

Friday will be another breezy day with sunny spells and showers. It will be mostly dry at first in the east with sunny spells, however cloudier conditions with showers in the west will spread eastwards through the day. Some of these showers will be heavy, particularly in the north and northwest. More persistent rain will spread eastwards in the evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Friday night will see cloud and rain clear eastwards early on in the night and it will become dry for a time. Scattered and heavy showers will spread across western counties later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees.

Saturday looks like another mixed day with sunny spells and scattered showers which will spread from the west through the morning, turning heavy at times. These showers will become isolated by the afternoon. There will likely be more outbreaks of rain in the southwest towards the evening as some thicker cloud moves in that direction. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Sunday's indications suggest rain will be widespread and heavy in places early on in the day before giving way to blustery showers. Strong southwest to west winds are likely to follow the rain with coastal gales developing, particularly near Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees.
