Met Éireann has confirmed the second named storm of the season - Storm Bert - will hit Ireland this weekend and a number of warnings for strong winds, rain and flooding have been issued

Met Éireann has confirmed the second named storm of the season - Storm Bert - will hit Ireland this weekend and a number of warnings for strong winds, rain and flooding have been issued.

The first of the weather warnings - a status yellow wind and rain warning for Ireland - is due to come into effect at 10pm this Friday while further warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend.

The most serious warning to be issued so far is a status orange rain warning for three counties - Cork, Kerry, Galway.

Met Eireann says Storm Bert will bring "intense falls of rain over a short period of time" in these counties and that caution is advised while the warning is in effect, between midnight and 10am on Saturday. 

Potential impacts include surface flooding, possible river flooding and very difficult travelling conditions.

Separately, a status yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning for Ireland remains in place following heavy snowfall in some parts of the country on Friday.

The warning, which came into effect at 8pm on Wednesday remains valid until midday this Friday.

Met Eireann says it will continue to be "very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches" in places.
