It appears the party's over on the weather front with temperatures beginning to fall after highs of almost 25C across the country during the week.

Met Éireann's latest forecast for the weekend and into next week predicts lower temps, drizzle, fog and heavy showers at times, although the mercury may still hit 20C on Saturday.

In the latest forecast, Met Éireann says: "Any areas of mist and fog will clear through the morning [on Friday]. It will be another dry day with long spells of sunshine, though it will be cloudier at times near the east coast. Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees, coolest near the east coast due to a light to moderate easterly wind.

"Saturday will start quite cloudy with patches of mist and fog. There will be some spots of drizzle too, mainly in Leinster and Munster. It will brighten up through the afternoon but some heavy showers are possible near southern and eastern coasts during the evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly wind.

"Continuing cloudy with further scattered showers extending to most areas on Saturday night. It will stay dry in the west and north with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees in a light to moderate north to northeast wind," they added.

Looking to Sunday, the forecast reads: "Showers in Leinster and Connacht will become more isolated Sunday morning. Cloudy across the southern half of the country, with rain moving in from the east later, turning heavy and possibly thundery at times. Staying dry with sunny spells further to the north. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with a light to moderate north to northeast wind.

"Rain will continue in the south on Sunday night, slowly edging southwards, but it will be dry across the rest of the country. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees in a light northerly wind. Some patches of mist and fog developing."

Beyond that and into next week, it looks like our weather will turn progressively more wintry.

"Rain will quickly clear from the far south on Monday morning and it will be a mostly dry day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Cloudier conditions and some light drizzle will move into northwestern areas through the day. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with a light northerly breeze," Met Éireann say.

"Cloud and showers will move into northern parts through the night, while it remains dry with some clear spells further south. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in a light northwest to west wind.

"Tuesday looks to start off with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers before rain arrives into the southwest later. Cool with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in westerly winds that will back easterly through the day," they concluded.
