Achill Island residents and visitors are urged to continue boiling water while treatment issues are resolved

Uisce Éireann has thanked the Achill Island community for its patience and cooperation as a Boil Water Notice remains in place for customers supplied by the Achill Public Water Supply.

The utility said protecting public health remains its priority while work continues to resolve treatment issues at the Achill Water Treatment Plant. Residents, businesses and visitors are advised to continue boiling water before use until the notice is lifted.

The notice also applies to customers served by the Ards/Currane, Bleanaskil 1, Dooega, Dooniver, Dugort No.1, Dugort No.2, Sraheen (Achill) and Valley 1 group water schemes.

Uisce Éireann acknowledged the disruption caused, particularly during the busy summer tourism season.

Colette Scahill, Water Networks Operations Manager for Mayo, thanked the community for its support.

“We know the last few days have been challenging for households, businesses and visitors across Achill and we’re grateful for the support shown to our teams on site by the community,” she said. “We want to reassure customers that everyone involved is fully focused on lifting the notice as quickly and as safely as possible.”

According to Uisce Éireann, the notice was introduced after unusually high water temperatures affected treatment processes at the Achill Water Treatment Plant.

Increased water demand during the current spell of warm weather also placed additional pressure on the system.

The utility has warned that the Boil Water Notice could remain in place for several weeks while remedial works are completed in consultation with the HSE.

In the meantime, customers are being urged to conserve water to help reduce pressure on the network and avoid overnight restrictions.

Water should be boiled before drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, making drinks or ice, and preparing infant formula. Uisce Éireann said it will continue to provide updates as work progresses towards lifting the notice.
