A large crowd gathered in Srah, Co. Mayo on Sunday (May 3) evening as a new memorial commemorating the 1921 Tourmakeady Ambush was officially unveiled, marking 105 years since the historic event.
The ceremony brought together local residents, historians and visitors to honour the IRA volunteers involved in one of the most significant engagements of the War of Independence in the region.
The memorial, which lists the names of those who took part, was described as a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the volunteers, as well as the wider community who supported them during the conflict.
A wreath-laying ceremony and the sounding of the Last Post at Srah Bridge provided a poignant moment of reflection, with many attendees visibly moved as the lives of those lost were remembered.
Three commemorative benches dedicated to Michael O’Brien, Pádraig Feeney and Tom Horan were also unveiled, recognising those who died on the Republican side.
Organisers said the strong turnout reflected the deep connection still felt locally to the events of May 1921, and the importance of preserving this history for future generations.
Following the outdoor ceremony, attendees gathered at Tourmakeady Hall where historian Sinead McCoole highlighted the role of Cumann na mBan, followed by the launch of Ultan Lally’s new book The Tan War in Ballyovey: Partry/Tourmakeady South Mayo.
