'Totally let down': residents group appeal north Mayo housing development

Friarscourt Residents Association lodged an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála earlier this month, for the construction of 47 homes in north Mayo.
Details of an appeal that was recently lodged against the major housing development in the north Mayo area have been released.
Friarscourt Residents Association lodged an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála earlier this month, for the construction of 47 homes at Friars Court on the Killala Road. The development comprises 32 three-bedroom, six two-bedroom, and nine four-bedroom houses.
In their submission, Friarscourt Residents Association stated its opposition to the construction of 47 houses at the rear of the existing estate.
The residents group, however, outlined their ‘full appreciation of the serious need for housing’ in the area but raised several ‘serious health and safety’ reasons as to why they are objecting.
The group stated that they are requesting that the developer find an alternate entrance and roadway to the development that does not put the residents of the estate ‘at risk’. Further stating their objection, the group outlined that an increase in traffic would pose ‘safety risks’ to children playing outside.
Furthermore, the group raised concerns surrounding pyrite houses within the estate that are set to be demolished and reconstructed within the next two years, stating that this would also add to the volume of traffic in the area.
The group also stated that they ‘feel totally let down by Mayo County Council’ as they ‘cannot sell their houses because of defective blocks used by the developer.’
An Coimisiún Pleanála has stated that the case is to be decided by November 2026.
