Well-known Mayo sports radio figure Nathan Murphy has been appointed as Managing Director of Today FM.

The Ballyhaunis native will oversee the audience growth strategy for the company.

Murphy is well known in both national and local circles. He started out as a sports reporter with Today FM in 2006, before making the move to Off The Ball on Newstalk.

Since then, he has been a staple on the airwaves, helping to bring both national and international sports stories to the Irish public.

The commentator will take the reins at Ireland's largest commercial radio station in October.

Murphy painted an excited figure when he spoke after securing the role.

“I’m incredibly proud to have the opportunity to return to Today FM and lead such a brilliantly talented and creative team," he stated. "I’ve remained an avid listener over the past decade and look forward to building on Today FM’s unique connection with Irish radio listeners, to enhance our position in the market”.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Bauer Media Audio Ireland CEO, Chris Doyle, said: “I’m delighted to appoint someone of Nathan’s calibre to Today FM. His breadth of experience, coupled with his innate understanding of Irish audience and his ability to identify and nurture talent, are key attributes he brings to this important role.

"Nathan will lead a passionate team, both in front of and behind the mic, and I look forward to seeing Today FM thrive under this leadership.”
