Young Mayo talent shines while kicking first American Football field goal

Mayo native Ryan McDonnell (second from left) celebrates kicking his first field goal.

One young Mayo man is certainly making strides overseas.

Ryan McDonnell from Knockmore left North Mayo a few weeks ago when he set off on an American adventure after securing a full scholarship which meant he would also play American Football for his college.

Making his debut for Henderson State University this week, the former Knockmore goalkeeper kicked the first score of the season in remarkable fashion. His wonderful strike turned out to be one for the history books. McDonnell’s effort from 51 yards was the longest successful field-goal in the history of the program. The North Mayo native was two from three on field-goals while also impressing as he hit six from six on extra points in what turned out to be his first as a 'Reddie.'

Now based in America, it wasn't plain-sailing for McDonnell to reach his current destination. Through hard work, determination and a positive attitude, the 24-year-old has unlocked a wonderful new career-path.

Back in May 2024, the Knockmore footballer came across a company called Leader Kicking which is run by Tadgh and Darragh Leader. The company offers pathways to players who feel they have a decent strike of a ball. McDonnell signed up and went to Dublin for a trial where his expectation was quite low. After getting on extremely well, Ryan got positive feedback and Tadgh Leader shared the news that a possible path to America could be on the cards.

The Knockmore kicker was somewhat sceptical, however his feelings flipped when he secured a full scholarship, which was hugely exciting for him, his family and his club.

The former goalkeeper believes American Football may soon rival Australian Football as a possible destination for GAA players looking to enhance their talents in a new game. In an interview conducted with Knockmore GAA in July, McDonnell developed the point. “I think it's even more achievable than the AFL, literally if you're good at kicking a football, you don't have to be too athletic, you just need to kick the ball accurately and far, that's more than half the battle. In an ideal world, I'd love to go onto the next stage.”

The young man announced himself on the big stage in the GAA world in 2021 when he saved a penalty in a memorable senior championship clash against Ballintubber. Coming on as a late substitute, McDonnell saved a last-gasp penalty from Diarmuid O'Connor to send his side into the semi-final. It was a special moment for the young footballer and he added another great memory to his CV with last night's brilliant kick for Henderson State.
