GAA ROUNDUP: Final day fixtures serve up plenty of drama

Aidan O'Shea and Breaffy will be hoping to claim the Division One trophy on Saturday when they face Crossmolina

Moy Davitts and Garrymore came away with a share of the points following a tight contest in a very warm Foxford on Saturday evening, thanks to a last-minute goal from Michéal Connolly. The game started with an exchange of scores. Garrymore went two points up in the 14th minute after Trevor Nally found the net.

Moy Davitts scored five points without reply, including two two-pointers, one from play and a second from a free. Garrymore finished the half with a second goal from Michéal Connolly. Moy Davitts started the second half the brighter and were four to the good by the 43rd minute. Garrymore then scored the next six points without reply, which had them two points ahead in the 53rd minute. The final five minutes were frantic with Moy Davitts scoring two goals and Garrymore scoring 1-1.

Moy Davitt's first goal came in the 27th minute, and Garrymore answered with a point. Straight after, Moy Davitts struck the back of the net again in the 29th minute, which had them 3 points ahead.

Two minutes later, the ever-reliable Michéal Connolly scored his second goal and Garrymore's third, which, luckily for Garrymore, was the last score of the game, which finished Moy Davitts 2-18 Garrymore 3-15. That result means that Garrymore finished the Division 1B league in second place and therefore have secured Division 1 status for 2026.

A powerful display from Castlebar Mitchels saw them defeat Ballinrobe in a convincing manner as Kevin Filan’s side ran out 6-12 to 0-6 winners. Although both sides were understrength, Mitchels coasted to victory as goals from Neil Douglas (two), Mark Cunningham, Shane Cunningham, Cian Walsh, and Brendan Gaughan saw the Castlebar men stroll to victory.

Evan O’Brien, Rory Gilraine, and goalkeeper Luke Kennings did their best for the hosts, but ultimately the difference between Senior against Intermediate told as Castlebar Mitchels had too much firepower and were in fine goalscoring form.

Last year’s Division Two champions, Crossmolina, booked their spot in this year’s Division One decider after they overcame Claremorris in what turned out to be winner-takes-all in Division 1B.

Brian Benson’s side ran out 1-15 to 1-11 winners, although it was the visitors who started best with Adam Beirne and James Shaughnessy kicking scores while up the other end Kobe McDonaald and Edward Gough replied.

A goal from James McCormack had the South Mayo men in front as Conor Loftus, Patrick Leddy, Dylan Flynn, and James Maheady hit back with points for the Deel Rovers. Former Mayo Minor Oisin Deane secured an important goal for Crossmolina as they finished best in a tight encounter.

Westport ran out 4-22 to 0-11 winners over Mayo Gaels in a game where the Gaels were without some of their main players. A goal from Killian Kilkelly had Westport in front at the break as Luke Tunney racked up an impressive 2-4 as Pat Lambert, Joey Holmes, Lee Keegan, and Rory Brickenden shone for the West Mayo side.

Westport finished strong as they ran out 4-22 to eleven point winners as Mayo Gaels will now play their trade in Division Two under the new restructuring of the Mayo leagues.
