Michael Horan’s Westport United side were crowned Champions of the Premier Division on Saturday evening as they clinched the title in fine style with a comprehensive victory over mid-table Crossmolina.

Coming into the game with just three games left, Westport sat in pole position as they have remarkably lost just one game this campaign. A win would result in the youthful side being crowned champs and that's exactly what happened.

The hosts dominated possession right from the off with Darragh Reynolds, Fionn O’Hora and Dan O’Malley all impressing with their confidence and skill.

A first half with limited goal chances was finished in style when Dan O’Malley headed home from an excellent Mark Mc Donagh cross.

The clinical Simeon Popov doubled the lead when he slotted home with a cool and precise finish after 52 minutes. The visitors created few chances in attack as the young Westport side spread the ball wide on every possible occasion.

Substitute Jack Walsh sealed the deal in the closing stages as the extremely young, but talented United side sealed the deal as members of their first team squad congratulated them in what turned out to be a fine evening for the Mayo giants.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
