CONNACHT SENIOR A POST PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP

Ballinrobe Community School 2-18

St Gerald's Castlebar 2-15

In Ballinrobe

BALLINROBE are back in the mix for Post Primary School glory after a fully-deserved win over reigning champions, St Gerald's, on Wednesday.

The hugely entertaining Senior A clash produced many talking points - the main one being the stunning display from full-forward Tom Lydon who kicked ten points for the winners in a performance which will be recalled for years to come.

Gerald's were five clear at half-time after a goal from Jude Lavin and impressive play from Joe Forry. However, the second half belonged to the Ballinrobe boys who fought like tigers for every inch of ground.

A goal from Luke Muniz brought the home side back into it early in the second period before Lavin hit a stunning net-shaker at the other end to keep Gerald's in front. That's when Ballinrobe drew a line in the sand and refused to be beaten. Daithi Butler was powerful at the back, Tiernan Egan majestic in midfield and Lydon unstoppable up front.

Thy fought back, drew level again and kept on going to secure a famous win which means victory over Summerhill in the final round of group games on January 8 will send them into the semi-final. This result also means the winner of the clash between St Gerald's and St Colman's, Claremorris will also advance to the last four.

A full report and after-match reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
