THE St Colman's championship journey took a detour in Sligo today when the boys in red were defeated by a powerful Summerhill outfit.

Colman's never hit their stride and a second-half surge from the home side was enough to keep them in the championship after their first round defeat at the hands of St Gerald's in Castlebar.

The strong wind blowing down the pitch favoured St Colman's in the first half but they ended the period dead level with the hosts at 0-4 apiece.

Summerhill had bossed matters around the middle and gobbled up the vast majority of Colman's kick-outs in the opening 30 minutes. This prevented the Mayo boys from building up a head of steam and when the second half began with a Summerhill goal from Adam Feeney, the home side were on their way.

However, Colmans hit back with a fine goal from Dylan Burke and when Darragh Beirne ran 50 yards and crashed a screamer off the crossbar the momentum seemed to be with the guests. However, Summerhill went down the other end and kicked six points in a row to take a deserved and decisive lead.

Colman's never stopped trying and worked hard to keep the gap as tight as possible as scoring difference may play a pivotal role at the end of the group stages.

A full report and aftermatch reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
