CONNACHT PPS SENIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP
Rice College 1-9
Coláiste Bhaile Chlair 4-7
Westport
THE boys from Claregalway produced a powerful second half display to knock Rice College out of the Connacht Championship on a miserable afternoon in Westport.
Rice College had to win after falling to defeat at the hands of St Jarlath's in the opening round but they were dealt a huge blow after 20minutes when their main scoring threat, Evan Durkan was forced off with an injury. The full forward had contributed four points prior to his injury, and his loss was a big one. However, a goal from Joey Holmes sent Rice in at the break leading narrowly on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-4
With far from ideal playing conditions on offer, the wind was causing problems for both teams. The game was there for the taking early in the second half and it was the Galway boys who kicked on when midfielder, Rory Gleeson scored consecutive goals in a short space of time. Rice responded with Tom Lambert, Joey Holmes and Killian Conway showing prominently but it wasn’t enough as the side coached by Galway Senior defender Sean Mulkerrin finished strongly with Sean O`Callaghan ending proceedings with a goal from the penalty spot.
