Summerhill College 0-12

Starting a new season as the reigning champions is never easy. Especially when there are only a handful of players from last year's Connacht championship winning squad left. Yet, a wobbly first half aside, St Gerald's eventually got the job done in impressive fashion today when Summerhill came to Castlebar.

In wintry conditions on a slippy pitch, which made life difficult for both teams at times. The Castlebar side almost conceded a goal on two occasions in the first half, but goalkeeper Euan McGowan pulled off two brilliant saves to deny the guests from Sligo.

St Gerald's were trailing by a single point at the interval and the players knew they had to improve according to team coach, Diarmuid O'Connor who spoke to The Mayo News after the match.

“The lads were already talking amongst themselves before we came in. We just said to keep at it, that it was coming and that the chances would arise and thankfully they did”

Three substitutes came on and made the difference. One of the additions, Evan Walsh, who was on last year's team, brought power and experience. St Gerald's started the second half more focused and physical. Within six minutes the Mayo boys scored two goals and two points, building a seven-point lead from which Summerhill would never recover. The goal scorers for St Gerald's were Patrick Garvey, Harry McHale, Evan Walshe and Sean Reid.
