MAYO JUNIOR FOOTBALL QUARTER FINAL
Eastern Gaels 1-14
Northern Gaels 2-7
BRICKENS
THE home side came out on top of the entertaining clash of the Gaels in East Mayo on Saturday.
A heavy shower of rain just before throw-in left the underfoot conditions poor which took away from the skillset of the playrs but lent itself to an entertaining encounter.
Northern Gaels will rue some second-half indiscipline as they found themselves level on 34 minutes but the concession of eight points from placed ball in the second-half proved to be their undoing.
The visitors had the brighter start and were ahead at the quarter hour mark when Niall McDonnell goaled from a rebound after his penalty was saved.
Eastern Gaels raised their own green flag in the 23rd minute when David Smith intercepted a pass and toe-poked the ball past Charlie Harrison to put his side into the lead.
Evan Godfrey and Senan Guilfoyle were unerring in the second-half, notching nine points between them in the run-in and both finishing with five points apiece after their names.
For Northern Gaels it was Niall and Ruairi McDonnell who kept them ticking on the scoreboard.
Both teams finished without the full compliment as Eastern Gaels saw Jarlath Concannon sent off in the 43rd minute for a second yellow card and Northern Gaels had Ronan Murphy and Mark McDonnell sent to the line on the hour mark.
Eastern Gaels were worthy winners in the end and deservedly march on to the semi-final.
