Late goal wins it for Carnacon

Hollymount undone by Fiona McHale's goal

Late goal wins it for Carnacon

A late goal from Fiona McHale was the difference between the sides in Clogher.

MAYO LGFA SFC ROUND 2

Carnacon 2-5

Hollymount 0-8

CLOGHER

IT was a tough day in the office but eventually Carnacon got the job done against a pugnacious Hollymount team. In American Football they say big players make big plays and that was the case with Cora Staunton today. The multiple All-Star kicked four points herself but her intervention in the 56th minute proved decisive.

Carnacon were only up by a point, when they pushed up at a Hollymount kick-out. The guests were struggling to pass the ball out of danger, and Staunton brilliantly intercepted a hand pass, kept calm with lots of bodies around her to superbly set up Fiona McHale who took aim and buried the ball in the net.

This goal sucked the life out of a Hollymount side, that up until then had battled on and bravely fought back from a three-point deficit midway through the second half to level the scores at 1-4 to 0-7 in the 53rd minute. Hollymount were driven on notably by Sarah Tierney, Lily Hession and Grace Campbell. However, they didn't manage to create goal chance all day as the Carnacon defence always made sure to put bodies in front of a potential kicker.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
