SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 1

Breaffy 1-13

Kilmeena 0-12

BREAFFY

This had the potential of a banana skin for last year's finalists Breaffy. Eventually a goal scored by Davitt Neary early in the second half proved to be the difference.

“A tough game, ”Breaffy's Aidan O'Shea told The Mayo News after the match. “We knew they were going to come all guns blazing. A young team, well coached. We're delighted with the win.”

Over the course of the 60 minutes, Breaffy did enough to claim the important home win. Matthew Ruane efficiently pulled the strings in midfield, Aidan O'Shea made his size and athleticism count and young Aidan Cunningham had a promising performance scoring a fantastic point.

For Kilmeena, their first game in senior championship for 118 years did not go as planned, as midfield motor Jack Carney admitted: “A big day for the club, first time in a senior championship game, a historic day that we wanted to mark with a win. But unfortunately we lost out. Probably the goal killed us. That took a lot out of us.”

However, Kilmeena wouldn't give in, they never surrendered. And even though they were seven points down with only ten minutes to go, they kept fighting and closed the gap to four before the finish.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
