Breaffy 2-15
Knockmore 2-13
In Swinford
Goals from James Minogue and Pierce Deane saw the Sean Deane era begin with a big victory for Breaffy in Swinford on Saturday evening.
The return of Aidan O’Shea to the starting team was the main talking point before the game and the big Mayo forward finished with three frees to his name and was a nuisance throughout for the Knockmore defence.
Goals from wing-back James Minogue and corner-forward Pierce Deane were the catalyst for Breaffy to pick up just their second win of the season and ease their relegation fears.
Minogue’s goal had put Breaffy into a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish just before the half-time break.
Charlie Bourke and Caolan Hopkins also found the net for Knockmore, with Hopkins' goal bringing the North Mayo men right back into the tie with five minutes left after Keith Ruttledge dispossessed O’Shea on his own 20-meter line.
The comeback was too late for Knockmore to get anything from the game as a strong second-half showing from Breaffy had them eight to the good with ten minutes left.
Ben Murphy, with four from play, and Pierce Deane, who finished with 1-3, were the tormentors in chief for the West Mayo men. O’Shea and Rory Martyn were also impressive for Breaffy.
Knockmore relied on a wider spread of scorers, eleven in total, but missed the cutting edge of Aiden Orme in their attack.
