IT could all end in tears, or they could become the first St Gerald’s team to take the top schools trophy in Connacht since 2020.

Whatever the outcome of their meeting with Maurice Sheridan’s Coláiste Baile Clár, the St Gerald’s lads playing their last season of school’s football will savour every second of the build-up.

“It feels savage now, especially after beating [St] Colman’s last week,” a smiling Shane Cunningham told The Mayo News after their semi-final win.

“I didn’t think it would get any better, but this is a very good win now and hopefully we can go all the way.

“The first half we came out flying because of the wind and kicked over our scores and stuff but the second half we knew they were going to come out when they had the wind. I thought we managed it well. It just shows we can win ugly as well which is very big for us.”

When he last spoke to us, Cunningham told The Mayo News – via these pages and our Instagram feed – that this St Gerald’s team would ‘die’ for each other.

He stands by that when asked to sum up what it would mean for them to win a Connacht Senior A title.

“Ahh it would mean so much,” beamed the Castlebar Mitchels midfielder, who won a Connacht title with the Mayo Minors last summer.

“As I said last time, them lads would die for the team and it’s just, it means a lot to be back in a Connacht final which I feel like we deserve to be in a Connacht final after a long wait.”

And his message to the students of St Geralds?

“Just get out in your numbers and support the lads because it’s a massive occasion for the boys and, as I said, them lads would die for the school, so get out and support.”

Yee heard him.
