Mayo Intermediate Club Football Championship

Round 3

Kiltane 1-10

Burrishoole 0-11

Kiltane secured their intermediate status with a hard-earned win over Burrishoole in a rain-soaked thriller in Crossmolina on Sunday afternoon.

The Erris men displayed all their renowned resilience to recover from an early five-point deficit to eventually edge their way to safety at the end of a match where no quarter was asked or given.

Burrishoole began impressively and were 0-6 to 0-1 clear after 25 minutes. Jason Doherty, Adrian McManamon, Alan Ryder, Fintan McManamon and Michael O'Malley all kicked points, but the Clew Bay men should have had more on the board. More composure in front of the posts would have paid rich dividends, but Brian McLoughlin's men were well-positioned as half time approached.

Then, after 26 minutes, Adam Carabine sent a long delivery into the Burrishoole goalmouth and Mikie Sweeney used his vast library of experience to flick the ball to the roof of the net. That score roused Kiltane from their slumber and points from the hard-working John Ginty and Carabine left the scores tied at the interval, 1-3 to 0-6.

The third quarter was a see-saw affair with first one team edging ahead and then the other. Mikey Doran was lively in the Kiltane attack while Owen Doherty was catching the eye at wing-back and the Erris men created two glorious goal chances but Sean Nevin denied them with stunning point-blank saves.

The scores were still tied with nine minutes to play before a surge yielded three points on the spin from Carabine, Sweeney and Ultan Corrigan and Kiltane led 1-10 to 0-10 as injury time arrived.

Burrishoole urgently needed a goal and went in search of it.

Adrian McManamon twice shot for glory but Ultan Corrigan and Sean Gaughan threw their bodies on the ball and when the final whistle sounded the men in blue and gold were safe and the gallant Burrishoole squad were headed for the relegation play-off.
