Castlebar councillor calls for GoSafe speed van along N60 at Manulla to be moved to a safer location

A GoSafe speed detection van is a health and safety hazard for motorists when it is parked along the side of a busy road in Mayo according to a Castlebar councillor.

There were calls at the monthly meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District for a GoSafe speed detection van which can be parked along the N60 at Manulla to move to a different location as it is blocking the view of motorists.

Speaking at the meeting, Fine Gael councillor Cyril Burke said that the van is often parked on a lay-by close to the junction for the Ballyvary road on the N60 and when it is it is a hazard for road users.

“When people are coming up from Manulla from the Ballyvary side to the crossroads, there is a speed van parked there on the left hand side,” he explained

“People coming onto the road from Manulla cannot see towards Balla when the speed van is parked there. They cannot actually see and we need to write to the relevant authorities to highlight that,” he said, adding he would like to see it moved to another location.

Speed vans are operated by the company GoSafe on behalf of An Garda Siochána and in Mayo they operate across nearly 60 'designated high-collision and community request zones'. The road where the GoSafe van is located in Manulla is a national secondary route but the speed limit at this location was reduced from 100km per hour to 80km per hour.

Cllr Burke was supported by Cathaoirleach of the municipal district, Cllr Al McDonnell who said he raised an important issue for motorists who use this junction and it was a health and safety issue which needs addressing.
