BALLINROBE went goal crazy in Newport on Saturday evening when they recorded a convincing six goals win over Burrishoole in the opening round of the Mayo intermediate championship.

The South Mayo men made an explosive start with goals from Ryan Corcoran and Ewan Duffy in the seventh minute and another from Kevin Quinn at the start of the second quarter.

The guests were 3-2 to 0-3 clear at half time and another net-shaker from Quinn in the early moments of the second period left them almost out of sight. However, Burrishoole never stopped trying and enjoyed their best spell with three points on the spin to leave the scoreboard reading 4-2 to 0-6 after 40 minutes. Midfielder Michael O'Malley and corner-forward Alan Ryder were prominent at that stage for the home boys but that was as good as it got for the Clew Bay side.

Ballinrobe swept forward again and another goal from Duffy put Peter Ford's men back in charge. There was no prospect of them being caught at that stage and with Aaron McDonnell, Evan Reaney and Darren McDonnell to the fore they pulled 14-points clear.

The match was as good as over at that stage, but there was still time for Quinn to bag his third goal of the evening before John Enda Flannelly brought the curtain down with a well-struck point.

A full report and after-match reaction will be carried in Tuesday's print edition of The Mayo News.
