Volunteerism is so often heralded as the lifeblood of Mayo sport, and with good reason.
Whether it be lining the pitch, placing the cones, making the tea, organising the buses or coaching the team, it takes a village to keep a club going, and one well-known club volunteer has been rewarded for her achievements at the Volunteers in Sport Awards.
The event, which was hosted by the Federation of Irish Sport, aims to herald those who give countless hours to the cause across the sporting spectrum in Ireland.
When Jes Gough from Kilmurry Youths was announced as one of those scooping honours at the event in the Crowne Plaza, Blanchardstown, it was no surprise to those around the club.
Gough is seen as a trailblazer in the club. Since becoming involved some 15 years ago, she has been a driving force in the establishment of girls' sides, while also giving her time to fundraising, coaching, organising events and serving as PRO.
Due to her time, the club's popularity has skyrocketed in the area, and in 2025, 103 girls were signed up to play with Kilmurry.
Her success doesn't just come away from the pitch, as last year, the Under-17 side captured the Mayo Premier League title.
She also helped to raise over €22,000 for the side to be able to play in the Barcelona Cup Tournament in October.
Jes also lends a helping hand to Crossmolina AFC, Gortnor Abbey, and MacHale Rovers LGFA in whatever few precious hours she has to spare.
Minister for Sport, Charlie McConalogue, praised the mammoth impact of a volunteer like Jes Gough.
“The culture of volunteering in sport is one that we have a proud tradition of in this country, and so it is fitting that we celebrate some of the outstanding individuals and groups from all sectors of the sporting community at this event," he stated.
"Be it coaching teams, preparing pitches, administering timetables, driving participants to training, matches, or competitions, none of it happens without the dedication of volunteers."
