In August 2024, he announced his retirement from professional soccer. And now David Cawley is back.
After a career as a pro, playing for Sligo Rovers, St Patrick's Athletic, Galway United, Finn Harps and indeed Ipswich Town under manager Roy Keane, he has decided to come home - soccer wise.
Ballina Town announced his return last night with a video on Instagram: David Cawley is coming back to Town.
He'll bring tons of experience and at 34 years of age, he should have plenty left in the tank to make his mark in the Mayo Super League.
Cawley joins manager Michael Duffy's team that finished fourth last year in the Elverys Sports Super League on 30 points.
"David is an outstanding addition to our football club but also our League and Mayo football in general", says manager Duffy: " It raises the profile of football in Mayo like never before. David's football pathway is a testament to his constant hard work and dedication to football. We have talented young footballers in this club and town and David's wealth of experience and winning mentality can only help them."
When Cawley puts on the Ballina Town jersey for the first time this season, it'll be his senior debut for his home club, because he left Ireland as a teenager to seek a career in England with Ipswich Town.
How many Mayo men can say they’ve scored a Europa League goal, won man of the match in European competition, received a grilling from Roy Keane, and gone up against Joe Cole and Harry Kane? David Cawley has done all of that.
