SPORTS DIRECT FAI CUP ROUND 1
North End United 1
Castlebar Celtic 4
In Hollygrove Townparks, Wexford
THERE were scenes of wild delight in Wexford this afternoon when Castlebar Celtic powered past the home side and secured a place in the next round of the FAI Cup. It was a stunning victory and one which highlighted the fine football played by the champions of Mayo.
The team managed by Stevie Gavin took the lead after nine minutes when Eoghan Hughes did the needful and it laid down a marker that the Hoops meant business. Their retained their slender lead to the break but North End began the second half on the front foot and Paul Murphy equalised after 55 minutes.
Celtic's character was being tested at that stage, and they responded magnificently. Three minutes later, Dylan Edwards put the Castlebar men back in front and when he made it 3-1 after 68 minutes the Celtic supporters who had made the long trip were in dreamland. It got even better six minutes from the end when Luke Kelly put the issue completely beyond doubt and sent the men in green and white into the next round.
A full match report from our reporter John Corless and after-match reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
