Dylan Howley’s early second-half goal helped propel Castlebar Celtic into a provincial final after what was a keenly contested joust at Celtic Park.

Castlebar could well have taken the lead on 15 minutes, when a superb delivery from Eoin Keane just failed to connect with the energetic Howley.

Iorras Aontaithe gradually settled, and led by the creativity of Peter McArthur and the work-rate of Dara Padden, the red and black certainly posed problems for the Castlebar defence.

The locals almost received the perfect half-time boost after 45 minutes when a chance was crafted for Ruairi Nevin, but the latter was unlucky to see his effort from an acute angle whistle wide.

A rejuvenated Castlebar dominated the opening moments of the second half and their work-rate paid dividends on 50 minutes. A splendid pass from Ben McHale released Howley, and the latter guided home a tidy finish beyond the reach of the Iorras goalkeeper.

If Iorras were rocked, then they didn’t show it, and the North Mayo men could well have levelled matters on 55 minutes, however, Oisín Reilly’s close-range header was thwarted by Jack Jensen.

Despite Iorras’ best efforts, Castlebar closed out proceedings impressively and the ‘Hoops’ can now look forward to a provincial final against either Maree/Oranmore B or Corofin United.
