Rice College Westport produced a truly remarkable late turnaround to snatch a National Under-19 final place after a thrilling two-hour extra-time battle with St Paul’s Community College in Frank Healy Park in Ennis.
Having dominated proceedings for the opening period, a sleepy start to the new half looked to have proved costly when Fortune Daniels seized upon a defensive lapse to put St Paul’s ahead in the 67th minute.
Despite a plethora of scoring chances, it didn’t appear to be Rice College’s day as they were repeatedly left frustrated. However, their never-say-die attitude did cough up one final opportunity at the death that substitute Simeon Popov finished to the net in the 97th minute to force extra-time.
Buoyed by that lifeline, the Connacht champions only grew in confidence once more for the additional twenty minutes and duly avoided another anxious finale when Evan Durkan’s corner was only half cleared to his brother Rian to volley through a crowded goalmouth to the net.
It ensures a Dr Tony O’Neill Cup final appearance against Dublin’s Blackrock College.
