MAYO FC took yet another step forward over the weekend as four different teams represented the fledgling club.
This year, the two-year-old club is fielding U-14, U-15 and U-17 boys teams and U-17 and U-19 female teams, all of which saw action over the weekend.
No team emerged victorious in the first round of the new League of Ireland campaign, with the U-15s suffering a 1-7 defeat at home to Athlone Town. Jakub Stec scored Mayo’s only goal with a wonder strike into the top left corner.
The U-14s, meanwhile, hosted Athlone Town in their league meeting, where they went 3-1 up with goals from Joshua Gordon and Mark Rowley (2) before shipping four goals to lose 5-3.
The U-17s were also unlucky, losing 1-0 away to Athlone Town despite an impressive showing from Ronan McElevey.
The U-17 girls, the only other Mayo team in competitive action, travelled north to Finn Harps, where new signing Emily Coleman scored their only goal in a 1-5 defeat.
For the first time, Mayo FC are fielding an U-19 women’s team. Managed by James Johnson, last year’s Mayo FC U-17 girls team boss, the U-19s lost 4-2 in a friendly against Sligo Rovers over the weekend, with Sarah Jane Kilcawley and Emily Jennings scoring for the visitors.
Johnson’s charges play Dundalk FC away in their first-ever League of Ireland game on Sunday.
