Mayo Super League Round 1

Westport United 0

Manulla 0

In Abbvie United Park

Despite Westport United’s dominance of possession, they could not break down a robust Manulla side in the Mayo Super League season opener on Friday night. The game was the first competitive match to be played under lights on the shiny new plastic pitch at United Park.

The hosts will be disappointed not to win it, especially with their second-half display, where they dominated all but the last ten minutes. Indeed, they probably would have taken the points, but for the outstanding displays of Podge McLoughlin at the back for Manulla, and behind him, Jack Livingstone minding the net.

Manulla had an early chance when uncertain handling by Gary Cunningham, resulted in Seán Dempsey’s effort being cleared off the line. When Kevin Kitterick beat the high line and crossed, Dan O’Malley’s shot was taken off the Manulla line by Andrew Shally near the end of the half. In between, Manulla striker, Conor Murphy had two headers saved by Cunningham.

Aidan McHale, who joined the action at the interval, threatened for Westport as they pressed – often with twenty-one players in the Manulla half. Dylan O’Malley too, was lively and tested Livingstone a few times, but Manulla held on for a deserved point.

A full report and reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
