Castlebar Celtic have overcome the recently-crowned Division 1 league champions to advance to the semi-final stage of the U-21 cup.
Although Stevie Gavin’s side were without some key players for this clash, The Hoops produced a resilient effort throughout.
Westport’s Dylan O’Malley had his effort from the penalty spot denied as Peter Basquille produced an epic save. The Celtic shot-stopper pulled off some outstanding saves for his side across the ninety minutes. Following the penalty kick, both sides raised the intensity levels as they went in search of victory.
Substitute Dan Ajenipa grabbed the opener in the 75th minute as his effort curled perfectly into the bottom right corner. It was that man again, Ajenipa, who inspired his side to victory. As the clock reached injury time, the pacey attacker chased down a long ball, heading it past the outrushing Westport goalie, and after an individual run, the ball was squared to fellow substitute, Rhys Saville who made no mistake with a cool finish to the net.
