ONE of the best displays the newly-formed Mayo FC U-17 girls team has given to date wasn’t enough to prevent their fifth defeat of the league this afternoon.

In the end, a single successful penalty kick made all the difference for Finn Harps who weren’t given a moment’s rest by a home side that impressed throughout and never stopped creating chances.

James Johnson’s team set the tempo in the opening quarter, with Mayo Gaelic footballer Kate Brennan threatening frequently - as she did throughout the game.

Finn Harps got very few clear-cut chances throughout the game but still broke the deadlock in the 13th minute after Caitlin Doherty was awarded a penalty which Sienna Bradley converted.

Remarkably, no more goals followed Deeney’s game winning spot kick, despite the hosts creating several chances.

Mayo FC applied the pressure right until the end but fell victim to offside rulings and saw corner kicks cleared away to safety.

The final whistle meant a relieved Finn Harps headed north with a win that still eludes Mayo FC in the U-17 League of Ireland.

A full report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News Sport.
