A game that was low-quality for long periods produced fireworks in the second half as veteran Ivan Barrett produced two goals to send the Tonra Cup back across the Bellacorick Bridge this afternoon.

The 36-year-old struck twice within eleven minutes of coming on to seal the deal for Iorras Aontaithe against a Swinford team that struggled to create meaningful chances.

The quality of passing, shooting and overall play was sorely lacking, particularly in the first half.

Therefore it was unsurprising that the goal arrived from a set play when Dara Padden sent the Swinford ‘keeper the wrong way from the spot after Denis Coffey gave away an unnecessary penalty.

It was, by far, the most remarkable moment of the second half, which, as expected, ended with a 1-0 lead for the barony boys.

The second half was a livelier affair, particularly after the introduction of Ivan Barrett, who controlled a long ball superbly to make it 2-0 to the winners three minutes after coming on as sub’.

Evan Rowley controlled the ball superbly from a corner before executing a lovely finish to make it a 1-2 game in the 75th minute.

However, Swinford shot themselves in the foot somewhat by leaving themselves totally exposed to an Iorras Aontaithe break, which saw a long ball swept up to Ivan Barrett who, literally walked the ball into the net for the winning goal.
