Belcarra native Luke McNicholas has signed a one year loan deal for fifth division side Rochdale AFC
Former Manulla FC keeper, goalkeeper talent Luke McNicholas, has secured a loan move from newly promoted League One side Wrexham to National League team Rochdale AFC.
On the club's website, McNicholas is quoted saying: “The move came about during the summer. When I heard word, it instantly got me excited. The way the gaffer wants to play, I think that will suit me right down to the ground. With the size and stature of the club, I think it is a great opportunity for me to come and play games. The club wants to go in the right direction and that is something big that you want to be involved in, so that was another pull."
“I feel like I’m comfortable on the ball and playing out from the back. I like to make big saves, come for crosses and dominate my box. I think my style of play will suit the team. I want to play as much as possible and get as many games as I can under my belt, and be successful here.”
McNicholas moved from Ireland to Wrexham a year ago which represented a significant change for him, who previously played for Sligo Rovers, Finn Harps and Cliftonville, as well as underage at Manulla FC.
In June, he told The Mayo News during a visit at home, despite not getting as much game time as he had hoped, he says being part of a promotion-winning team has been a rewarding experience.
McNicholas back then was clear about his ambitions: "I want to become the number one goalkeeper at Wrexham. That's why I signed."
Things move fast in the soccer business with the loan move now. Regarding the fact that Wrexham penned a two-and-a-half-year contract with McNicholas in January, might hint at the long term strategy.
The move to Rochdale is certainly an opportunity for McNicholas' career, if he gets the necessary game time and makes a case for himself with convincing and consistent performances in the Rochdale jersey during next season.
