Westport United have retained the Henry Downes U-17 Cup at the expense of a fine Snugboro team in Umbro Park in Castlebar this evening.

Both teams gave fine displays, but the winners displayed greater skill, better use of possession and a greater variety to their play in securing their four-goal win.

There was little caginess or hesitation shown by either team, with both adopting an attacking mindset from the outset.

Inspired by midfield maestro Darragh Reynolds, Westport United broke the deadlock 25 minutes in when a cross from Matthew O’Malley bounced in the box onto the head of Logan Heraty, who guided it into the Snugboro net.

United’s dominance only grew as the game went on. They were justly rewarded when midfielder Joshua Moran directed a beautiful effort into the top corner to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute.

Snugboro kept on trying and had a few chances but were ultimately written off when their defenders failed to clear the danger and allowed Ben Holmes to make it 3-0 in the last ten minutes.

Holmes put the icing on the cake when he got on the end of a sublime through-ball to make it a four-goal win for ‘United in injury time.
