Westport United got their Super League campaign off to a successful start with a comfortable win over Ballinrobe Town this evening (Thursday).

The locals played a one-touch passing game that was beautiful to watch -  unless you were a Ballinrobe player. Even then – all they too, could do, was watch for most of this game.

Ballinrobe were unable to deploy their usual tight, man-to-man, approach; they simply couldn’t get anywhere near the youthful Westport side.

A brace of goals apiece from Jack Dawson and Kevin Kitterick, and one each from Fionn O’Ruain, Cian Halpin, and a midfield masterclass from Cillian White, decided this contest.  Westport missed a few too, including a penalty from Dawson, expertly saved by Seán Shaughnessy in the Ballinrobe goal.

Westport went in 2-0 up at the interval, but veteran goal-poacher, JP O’Gorman, a former Westport player, pulled one back for Ballinrobe immediately after the restart.

Kitterick fired in his second and Westport’s third two minutes later, and then Jonathan Lawrence was shown a second yellow card by referee Tom Jennings, reducing Ballinrobe’s number to ten and their chances of getting something from this game, to nil.

The penalty miss rounded off a hectic ten minutes from the restart. The game was over long before Seán Vahey pulled one back for Ballinrobe, in stoppage time.
