ANOTHER big win for the East Mayo men in the Connacht Junior 1B League. They beat Galwegians at the death.
The Ballyhaunis scrum was a crucial factor throughout in snatching the win in the last minute:
“Our scrum was immense. We were driving them eight, ten metres at a time,” said assistant coach Gabriel Gallagher afterwards: “We were getting penalties off scums. That's how we got our first try. And the game-winning one.”
Ballyhaunis were down 8-14 at half-time. They then had a good start into the second half, but failed to get any scores from a period of dominance. Galwegians hit back with a try to push it to 8-19. At sixty minutes, Ballyhaunis closed the gap with a converted try to 15-19.
Even the subs coming on in the forwards didn't put a dent on their scrum superiority. Penalties brought Ballyhaunis close to the try line.
And after a barrage of scrum penalties, the hosts eventually pushed over for a last gasp victory. Final score: 20-19.
It's their fourth win out of five in the Junior 1B League.
Next up is a Mayo derby against Ballinrobe in two weeks. Ballyhaunis scores: Jason Morley scored two tries, Scrum-half Rowan Gouws added a try, and Scott Finlay with a conversion and a penalty.
