The victorious Ballina squad huddle at the end of Saturday's thrilling Cup match in Heffernan Park.
CONNACHT JUNIOR CUP ROUND ONE
Ballina 32
Corinthians 22
(after extra-time)
A hugely entertaining cup match ended with victory for the home side in frosty Ballina on Saturday night after extra time. The home side were the better team in the opening half and led 22-10 at the interval. However, Corinthians dominated much of the second period as they went looking for the scores to get back into it.
Excellent defensive play from the home side kept the guests out until the 76th minute when scrum-half Peter Rainsford got over for a converted try to close the gap to five as time ticked away.
Then, in the final play of normal time, out-half Ross Doogan broke through the Ballina defence and touched down near the posts. That balanced the scores and left Doogan with the chance to win it with the conversion, but his kick drifted narrowly wide and extra-time was called for.
Ballina kept ball in hand in the added periods and were the better team. Liam Jones produced the game's decisive moment early in extra time when he raced over for a superb try and when Craig McCormick converted and then added a long-range penalty the men in green were headed for the next round.
A full report and after-match reaction will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
